Elisabeth’s fifth album and her first recorded in Europe. Produced by Filippo De Laura, it is an extraordinary disc, rich in nuance and scents of the Orient, that add to her universal style, which already includes the distinctive qualities of West Coast melodies and psychedelic sounds combined with harmonic progression and the structure of improvisational jazz…

Missing Love This is the first song I wrote for the album. When I wrote it, I was still living in Nashville and commuting back and forth to Europe for tours. It is the story of a long-distance relationship. Love can not always be what I want it to be. It can not answer all my questions, especially when the relationship is not the right one. This song uses the concept of ‘missing’ in two ways: the sadness of ‘missing’ the presence of a person, and then, ultimately, realizing that love itself is ‘missing’ from the picture.

Mancanza D’Amore

I Want To Understand You

This is a story of communication between people of diverse languages, cultures and backgrounds. This can be a frustrating experience that often leads to misunderstandings, but also it can be a playful and seductive opportunity. Filippo arranged a very special and unique sound for this song. He played different Indian stringed instruments and an Indian Mohan vena slide guitar which creates a very seductive atmosphere. My singing teacher, Francesca Cassio, sang a gorgeous and enchanting improvised vocal part. We used her instead of a trumpet! This is the only song with no drums or percussion.

Voglio Capirti

Lost Or Found This is an old story with new faces. It is about the eternal battle and inner conflict caused by indecision of how, if, when, and why to end a relationship: yes, no, maybe so, I don’t know! The mind says NO but the heart, blind to all logic, says YES. This song contains the meaning of the album title, ‘Slow Release’: a separation does not happen overnight with a simple NO. It is a long, slow process of prying open the jaws of attachment to release the emotion. In the middle of indecision, love can be released, discarded, rejected and lost, or, it can be found, resurrected, and resuscitated. In all cases, love is not to blame. Love is quietly, and patiently, waiting, for us to stop fighting our inner demons, and to be free to give and receive love.

Perso o Trovato

Sì, no, forse.

Gone In A Storm Here I reflect upon the dramatic break-up of a relationship, that took place over several changes of season. Change of season and the evolution of life in nature, became symbols for the elements of an intimate love relationship.

Via Nella Tempesta

Thin Line The heart is the control center of the body, not only physically but also emotionally. The body and mind are connected through the heart. The introduction of this song contains a symphonic arrangement, which also appears halfway through, before the third verse. This ‘heart symphony’ was created by a process called Hertzklang Therapy developed at The Paracelsus Klinik in Switzerland. The guitar chords and vocal melody were inspired by this ‘heart symphony’. The Hertzkland Therapy, through specific software, transforms into music the relative data from a person’s electrocardiogram and heart beat. The signals vary depending on the breathing, blood pressure, hormonal activity, stress level, and emotional state of the individual. The greater the rhythmic variations, the more healthy the heart and nervous system. In Hertzklang Therapy, one can listen to one’s own ‘heart music’. Thin Line is derived from my body’s own unique rhythm, effected by psycho-physiological (mind-body) changes. This adds a very personal element to this composition. In life we are all walking and living on a very fine line with our health. If we are not attentive, one careless, false move, could cost us an irreversible fall. This song is my reminder to breathe deeply and stay connected with my own heart’s rhythm.

Linea Sottile

We Already Know

When a story between two people is coming to an end, they already know the inevitable, but are not ready to accept it. There is conflict between mind and heart, between premonition and awareness. The final release can take so long; like a film in slow motion. The ultimate, unavoidable lesson, is that love embraces both sides of the coin: holding on and, the inevitable letting go, by choice or not; hence the human drama is expressed in joy and grief, denial and acceptance. I love this song. It has all the elements needed to make a good listening experience: a catchy melody, memorable hook line, a good sound production, a playful, swingy rhythm with an enduring message in the lyrics and storyline; all of which give insight into the character of the artist.

The Ghost Of My Blues

This song has all of the humor, passion, patience, frustration, forgiveness, and acceptance that I feel when I reflect on my past. I try to surround myself with new memories, but, after all is said and done, the same person remains in the mirror staring back at me. I run, but I can’t hide, I forgive, but I won’t forget. I repeat the same patterns and mistakes until I confront them. Then, and only then, will I understand, let go, and be free to move on.

Straight For Reality

Death and divorce share some similar aspects. In the cycle of grief for the loss of a loved one, there is, in the end, no choice; if one wants to live a full life, eventually, one must face reality, and let go in order to move on. This can be a slow, tedious process, before final acceptance is reached. The title idea comes from the expression,”Watch out! We are headed straight for that tree!”. Eventually reality demands your attention and will overcome the fantasy. We can move on when we are not afraid of the future, and we can keep inside us whatever part of that person we chose to hold onto forever. I love the arrangement and the dynamics of this song, also the distorted electric guitars.

Deep In Blue

I wrote this song almost 20 years ago when I first moved to Nashville. I have always liked the warm, melancholy feeling inside this song. It has the quiet, late-night vibe of a woman alone with her guitar, surrounded by a warm, blue light. I am not a blues singer, but I every so often I have the blues, and I do know one thing about the blues: if you got the blues, the best medicine is to play the blues! Filippo’s production on this song takes it outside the normal, straight ahead, blues arrangement. Francesca Cassio, my singing teacher, sings a beautiful and sensuous vocal improvisation in the middle and end of the song. I feel that the end result is powerful in creating a sensuous blue mood, and also successful in showing a vulnerable and human side to my character.

One More Last Time

Have you ever wanted to stop time and wish for a special moment to last forever? I started to write this song on a bus in Barcelona going to the airport at 5.30 am. The moon was low in the sky, the sun had not risen, and the people were still asleep in their homes. For me, it was a magic moment I wanted to stop time. This is a fantasy lullaby for lovers who want to hide under the blanket from the harsh light of reality, and to try again, one more last time.

Missing Love

This city is full of sights to see
Shops and museums and good things to eat
The people are kind they help a woman who’s lost

I’m in my own world walking slow
Wishing I had someone to get to know
Someone to talk to someone who needs me too

You are the stranger in my movie
My leading man the star who woos me
Sweep me away carry me over the rainbow

Love won’t answer all of my questions
Love will teach me another hard lesson
I keep coming back to see what I’m missing
I’m missing you

You are a stallion proud and alone
No one can touch your fiery soul
I am a bird singing a song to soothe you

You are a sail and I am the boat
The wind is our love that we can’t control
The compass is spinning stop fighting it and let go

Love won’t answer all of your questions
Love will teach you another hard lesson
You keep coming back to see what you’re missing
You’re missing me

Love won’t answer all of our questions
Love will teach us another hard lesson
We keep coming back to see what we’re missing
We’re missing love

I Want To Understand You

I’m watching your lips
You play with words
Your tongue is quick
And your eyes express
Show me your language
I want to understand you

I’m reading your mind
Like a good mystery book
You keep me up all night
Wondering what’s happening
I’m learning your language
I want to understand you

Talk to me slow
Keep it simple and clear
I need you close
So I can hear your language
Then I will understand you

CHORUS

Lost or Found

I’m not gonna call you I’m not gonna fall
Back into your arms back under your spell
I’ll write you a letter and tell you all
The good things I see in you
That keep me wanting more

My heart is spinning when I say I love you
but I’m leaving
My head is shaking when you say,
“This is the end”, again
Our signals get crossed when we try
to be friends
Love is lost or found between yes and no

Yes, no, no, yes, I don’t know
How to let you go
Yes, no, no, yes, I don’t know
How to say no
Yes, no, no, yes, you know
I wanna say yes
Yes, no, no, yes, I don’t know

Gone In A Storm

Here comes that warm wind again
Perfume of Spring
Roses are red and violets are blue
Like me and you – me and you

Winter came and Winter stayed
There’s still a chill when I think of you
When I think of you

We could have had a long hot Summer love
Riding the wave
But Summer doesn’t last long before you know it’s
Gone in a storm
Gone in a storm
Gone in a storm
Gone in a storm

The leaves are falling down now
The fields are brown
Our love has changed like everything
It’s sad but true about me and you

We could have had a long hot Summer love
Riding the wave
But Summer doesn’t last long before you know it’s
Gone in a storm
Gone in a storm
Gone in a storm
Gone in a storm

Thin Line

I see you looking at me
You see more than anybody
Watching my eyes and reading my face
You know more than I can say

I wanna feel good I wanna be strong
But I keep slippin’ and falling down
Two steps up and one step back
I’m tryin’ to stay on track
Tryin’ to stay on track

I hear a heart cryin’ to be released
Lay down the guns of anger
Make way for peace
Take a deep breath – enjoy the ride
Nobody can turn back time
We’re walkin’ on a very thin line

Tell me good things now tell me the truth
I’ll sing you a song ‘cause that’s my cure
There is a rhythm runnin’ through my life
That’s changin’ all the time
Changin’ all the time

I hear a heart cryin’ to be released
Lay down the guns of anger
Make way for peace
Take a deep breath – enjoy the ride
Nobody can turn back time
We’re walkin’ on a very thin line

We Already Know

Hey look who’s here tonight
It’s been a long time
You always catch me by surprise
So how are you and how am I
Gonna stop this fire

I know what I want
Is not what I need
You want what I don’t have inevitably
So what are we doing here
Heart to beating heart

We’re makin’ wishes for impossible things
Stealin’ kisses for the lonely nights
We are living
We are still learning
What we already know
We already know

The heart wants it all
But the mind says, “No, no, no”
The love that we build up
You tear down slow
So where do we go from here
When we already know

We’re makin’ wishes for impossible things
Stealin’ kisses for the lonely nights
We are living
We are still learning
What we already know
We already know

We know we have tried
A thousand times I’ve cried
We know how the story goes
Love is holding on and letting go

We already know
We’re letting go

The Ghost Of My Blues

I want to change my memory
Bury these old bags and bones
Cut my hair and buy some new clothes
And try to lose the ghost of my blues

I’ve got my pills and remedies
For whatever is ailing me
I read books and watch movies
And try to fool the ghost of my blues

All the mistakes I make
Habits that I can’t break
Follow me to the grave
All is forgiven but never forgotten
What I can’t undo is the ghost of my blues
I’m gonna fly far away
Live my life in a new way
But I still wake up with the same face
No I can’t lose the ghost of my blues

All the mistakes I make
Habits that I can’t break
Follow me to the grave
All is forgiven but never forgotten
What I can’t undo, no I can’t lose
The ghost of my blues

Straight For Reality

I’m trying not to think
Of what I must let go
‘Cause it doesn’t matter how much
I wanna hold on
Wanna hold on

It’s become impossible
I have no choice
I don’t wanna believe you’re gone
And I gotta move on
Gotta move on
Gotta move on

Move on, move on

Life is a one-way ride
From the mountain to the sea
This is the end of a fantasy
We’re headed straight
straight for reality
Straight for reality
Straight for reality

We’ll cry for what we’ve lost
And we’ll love what’s left
When we free ourselves from fear
Then we can move on
We can move on
We can move on

Move on, move on

Life is a one-way ride
From the mountain to the sea
This is the end of a fantasy
We’re headed straight
straight for reality
Straight for reality
Straight for reality

I’m trying not to think
Of what I must let go

Deep In Blue

A vision of blue fills my room
Deep in the night I’m losing the fight
But I don’t mind

‘Cause a woman is free to do as she pleases
There is no reason to explain her feelings
Her moods and mysteries
So leave me alone I’ll be alright
The blues is how I feel tonight
I’m deep in blue

Nothing is wrong but something’s not right
I’m deep in blue tonight
A melancholy mood feels so right
I’m deep in blue

I’m a drifter at heart lost in the dark
Feeling my way through these blue days
To a better place
The closer I get the more I feel
The deeper I have to go to be
Deep in blue

Nothing is wrong but something’s not right
I’m deep in blue tonight
A melancholy mood feels so right
I’m deep in blue
I’m deep in blue

One More Last Time

I’m not ready for the sun to rise
I want it to stay night
The moon can remain in the sky
And world in peace one more night
And lovers like you and I
Can dream one more last time

Another round for the moon
One more last time for me and you
To make what’s wrong right
Then we can pretend nothing happened
And the sun won’t ever rise
One more last time
One more last time

I’ve been waitin’ for you to change
It’s like wishing for another man
Some things remain the same
Now I understand
Tonight is the night we’ll see
if love is meant to be

Another round for the moon
One more last time for me and you
To make what’s wrong right
Then we can pretend nothing happened
And the sun won’t ever rise
One more last time
One more last time

Blow Up Music Magazines – Giovanni Vacca – May 2011

Slow Release is an intimate and well-played album …without a doubt, love is the dominant theme of these lyrical vignettes which are infused with music reminiscent of some of the greatest American artists such as Joni Mitchell, Ricki Lee Jones, Diana Krall, Ani Di Franco, and Norah Jones. Elisabeth’s songwriting betrays an individual and well-rounded style… where the artist, who studied at Berkelee School of Music, recalls her affection for the great tradition of African-American jazz and blues.

Rockerilla Music Magazine – Alessandro Hellman – Septembere 2011

Slow Release, is complete with self-awareness, composed of intimate and refined ballads, with a lazy but sure pace, tinged in autumn hues, that reveal the journeys of the soul through an internal shade. Every ingredient is blended with the wisdom of unusual chord progressions in a happy synthesis of West Coast folk, blues, as well as overtones of jazz and eastern scents; sustained by a clean rhythm that solicits journeys into syncopated rhythmic variations with fluid pop guitar lines capable of welcoming inflected movements of a sensual and elegant voice. Clean sound and at the same time, deliciously dark (a rare combination).

La Repubblica – Chiara Piselli – August 2011

Pure and refined with her vocal phrasing…In all the songs one perceives the passion for life, albeit evasion from reality, along with an awareness of her own fragility and solitude.

www.mescalina.it – Mario Giovannini – March 2012

Fifth album for the American singer-songwriter… shows how the maturation of the person has influenced the artist. Slow Release… a clear statement of intent, is a work full of content, colors and shades…savoring slowly a ‘slow release’. It takes a moment to enter the world of Elisabeth, but it can be worth it.

Gianni Zuretti – April 2012

Just listen to the first sixty seconds of Missing Love to [have] the feeling of being in front of a high level artist; the elegance of interpretation, refined sound, silky voice, at times extremely Mitchelliana, are the total stylistic elements … along with an affirmation of full artistic maturity, but also personal growth. It is a job to “slow release” a very thoughtful album, that came after love affairs have marked the beautiful and talented songwriter. Recording with musicians of great quality who were able to express the sound in Elisabeth’s head and heart, the results have made a very strong and impressive quality recording, the arrangements, and the overall mood. All the songs are exciting and are an expression of writing skills that few are able to give. The lyrics examine love in all its manifestations especially those that leave scars on the heart… excellent musicians, dynamic and clear recording brings a disc of great elegance and sophistication; we suggest not to let it get away … you will be enchanted also by Cutler’s live performance, which reveals an artist of great and real substance.
